The department was established in 1971, three years after the establishment of the Basra Medical College. Work began in the department in its old location in Bab Al-Zubair , at the beginning, the department was merged with the department of surgery and its administration was within the department of surgery, most of the teaching staff at that time belong to the Ministry of Health. In 1975 the department was headed by Dr. Fawzia Al-Shamaa as the first department chief, followed by Dr. Rajaa Saleh Al-Tikriti to 1983. The department moved to the site of Al-Sadr Teaching Hospital in 1980 until 2011,when the college was moved to its current location. A higher diploma study was established in the department at the beginning of the last decade of the last century (1993) preceded by the Arab Board study where the department supervised the studies of the Arab Council and the Iraqi Council for Medical Specializations, it gained fame at the national level - and supervised the holding of the first obstetrics and gynecology conference in Iraq after achieving first place in the results of ministerial examinations on Iraqi medical colleges.
The department now continues to provide its services to the community.
- The branch adopted the use of advanced methods of teaching, including teaching small groups.
- Subject students to the questionnaire from time to time.
- Writing an annual scientific plan and submitting it for evaluation at the end of the year.
- Writing a self-calendar for the department in the year 2015-2016 in both Arabic and English.
